I believe you can create your own calm
Sounds unbelievable?
I used to think feeling calm was for everyone else but me. And using meditation to access calmness, well don’t get me started!
I tried meditation in my 30’s. As a newly married, overwhelmed media buyer in corporate America, juggling renovating houses on the side, I wanted to feel less stressed and more peace.
My name is Jane Otton, Founder & Head Teacher at Calm Mind College. I'm US born and raised, Sydney, Australia based for the last 24 years.
Long story short, I tried learning how to meditate, but I didn't get it. I had so many questions. Was I doing it right? How was it supposed to feel? Was I overthinking it?
Eventually I dropped out of my meditation group. But still had this nagging feeling that I wasn't done.

Guess what?
I wasn invited to join another meditation group by my Bowen Therapist, after moving to Sydney a couple of years later. She thought meditation would help me manage my carpel tunnel syndrome.
Meeting in her clinic on Sydney's lower North Shore, we all were just a regular bunch of folks who shared the same desire. We wanted to feel less stressed and have healthier bodies.
This time it worked! I learned how to meditate after a couple of sessions. And I kept it up, meditating daily. I was pleasantly surprised. Even dare I say, mildly shocked at how easily it had come together.
My elusive search for calm outside of me, became an inner journey of going inside and accessing the peace that was always there, waiting for me.
What a revelation!
I felt calmer, my body was more relaxed. The numbness and tingling in my wrist continued to improve. I was sleeping better and felt less reactive even during times of stress.
Why did meditation work this time?
Hmmm, a couple of things stand out. My teacher really cared. He was knowledgeable and showed us how to activate our relaxation response.
He made the process of learning simple and easy, by guiding us out of our heads and into our bodies using different meditation styles. Answering our questions, validating what we were feeling.
And confirming that yes, I was meditating. Yay! Finally, I got it and I could feel and see the benefits.
This gave me the confidence to keep up my daily practice, some 19 years later it's still deepening and ever expanding.
But there was an even bigger surprise waiting...
My meditation teacher showed me how to bring meditation, mindfulness, breath techniques and other new holistic tools to my daily life.
Expanding and building on the insights and relaxed feelings from meditation and our coaching sessions, he showed me how to practically apply this to all areas of my life, including work and relationships.
Second light bulb moment
What a gift this is! You see, he was also a holistic coach. In my private coaching sessions, he showed me how overcome my fears, to unblock old stories.
To feel worthy. To be more empowered. To find my voice and learn how to speak up in the moment. He held me accountable.
Most importantly, he taught me how to go inside and and find the answers to my own burning questions.
Activating me to be my own problem solver both personally and professionally, further supporting my goals and dreams.
Creating transformational experiences for me that prior to this, I had not had or thought possible.
While this may feel like over sharing to you. As a reformed cynic myself, I get it if you're a little uncomfortable - it could be a good thing - no judgement here:-)
I am grateful to my teacher coach for helping me, believing in me when I didn't, for being a positive role model, mentor, friend to this day and guiding light.
From there a fire was lit within. i was so enthused that I retrained as a meditation teacher and holistic coach in mid-life.
I loved helping others have similar experiences and transformations like I had, in my private practice.
The third act
After seeing the transformative results my meditation and coaching clients were having, I realised that I wanted to help more people feel and experience the many benefits of these modalities.
To show them how to experience their own calm, expanding from there. Ultimately empowering them to share their knowledge and skills to create transformational results with their students and clients, through meditation, stress management techniques and holistic modalities.
So I opened Calm Mind College. I've already trained hundreds of people from all walks of life to become meditation teachers and holistic coaches.
It's been a full circle moment for me, coming back to what I've always loved, teaching and coaching others.
Having started as an elementary school teacher, worked in corporate advertising in the US, property investing, co-ran a personal development company in Australia and now living my dream.
It's personally deeply fulfilling and professionally rewarding to teach, support and coach my students at Calm Mind College.
I truly enjoy getting to know each of my students. It's a privilege and honour teaching, helping my students see their goals and dreams come alive.
So, back to our question, is it possible to create your own calm? I say yes, 100%!
